Watercolor Workshop

Instructor: Frank Francese

Oct. 20th, 21st and 22rd, 2023
9am – 4pm
$250.00 3-day workshop

This is what I’d like to do and have students prepare for this important step in learning the sketching and using value system.

Values are the different shades from white of your paper to your darkest areas of any drawing and most important how to apply this step in creating some award winning watercolors.

Francese explains

Every painter needs a starting point, I always use a plan, a sketch in order paint a competent painting. I had to learn this important step in 1970s and 80s. I’ve spent countless hours working on perfecting my craft.

There is the old art saying when approaching painting

“One must have a plan or if not, you plan to fail”

However

” Too much planning will also lead to failure, its like putting 10 lbs in a 5 pound container.”

So, one must devise a method of planning that works for each artist, as we are all different.

Friday morning,  9am-12 noon, will be spent learning different approaches, like the old saying ” All roads lead to Rome”!

There are many ways and mediums to sketch.

Pen, pencil, markers,  inks.⁹

Also using a brush one can sketch using Ivory Black wc paint. Just thin down your paint with water.

Also using your watercolor paints one can sketch using a small piece of wc paper.

Francese will show the students each way listed above. We will use 1hr on each different mediums.

Everywhere I use to teach, I was always asked, “How can I get better results with my painting,  old and young alike,  have asked this question.

I also, asked this question in 70s, 80s, and I was always told, sketching your idea, your plan, is the most important step any artist can take. It gives the artist a starting point.

After 20 years of learning this step I took it to another level:

I taught myself how to paint watercolors, using my sketch. I would divide each sketch into 3 areas

Background, middle ground and last, foreground.

I made shapes of each and using no pencil guidelines,  I would start applying my color.

Always starting at top, Background shape applied first, painting it as one shape, no detail.

Once all three areas are applied then using shapes and shading to develop a three dimensional image. Using different steps to achieve this.

What I would like from students is for them to bring as many sketches as possible.

Using a contour drawing, line only to design your three areas. It serves two purposes

If you have a contour drawing,  all I have to teach is how to create an interesting image using the value system of lights and darks.

If each student brings their sketches I can evaluate each artist as to where they stand, as to where I can help them the most.

We have a very short time to achieve this, so having already drawn images are a must.

The theme of this year’s class  is

“Painting West Coast”

So please bring any many ideas from your travels etc.

I will be starting painting Friday afternoon at 12:30 pm and my first demonstration will be of Laguna Beach area of Southern Cailifornia.

Saturday’s class we’ll paint two watercolors using my sketches, or if student has their own ideas, even better.

My two demos will be of areas around San Francisco and San Mateo Coast. My morning demo will be the lighthouse at Pigeon Point and Whaler’s Cove.  This area is very important to California history.

The afternoon demo will be Mendocino coast line.

Subday we’ll paint the Oregon coast, starting at Bandon at Coquille State Beach and bird sanctuary where Facerock and Wizards Hat rock formations are located.

My afternoon demo will be the Coquille River Lighthouse.

Watercolor Workshops
Sterling Edwards, TWSA, CSPWC, WPA, NWS

Painting Loose and Expressive Watercolors

This will be a watercolor workshop for all skill levels that will focus on painting a wide variety of subjects using loose watercolor techniques. Sterling will demonstrate how to use large stiff bristle brushes for washes of color and creating expressive textures as he paints a landscape, a floral, and a stylized painting. Who knows, he might even show how to paint an abstract one afternoon.

Each morning of the class, he will paint something different so that everyone can see how his techniques can be employed in any painting. There will be plenty of creative watercolor techniques explained and demonstrated in this class including negative painting, building a strong composition, sgraffito, saving areas of unpainted white paper and building rich dark values, charging and glazing colors, overlapping shapes to create depth and dimension, creative color mixing, working wet into wet to achieve soft edges, and much more.

Students will have plenty of painting time throughout the workshop as they work on their own paintings. Sterling will be available to assist and answer questions throughout each day. It is also not required to paint what Sterling painted each day. He encourages everyone to paint what they want but to try and incorporate some of his techniques to expand their skill level.

Sterling Edwards is very well known for his informative watermedia workshops and his laid back and sometimes humorous style of teaching. Come prepared to learn, laugh, and paint.
